Parents as Teachers
WFSC offers structured home visiting to families with children ages 0-5, as well as pregnant individuals, as Approved Users of the national Parents as Teachers (PAT) organization. This service is designed to enhance child development and school readiness through parent education and parent-child activities. Each of our Family Development Specialists (FDS) are identified as Parent Educators with the PAT National Center. PAT Parent Educators help parents understand child development, support children’s learning, connect families with needed resources and empower parents to make the best choices for their families. These strategies align with the protective factors in the Strengthening Families™ approach.
The FDS staff member will come into the home monthly (or more as needed) to provide parents with information and activity suggestions on their developing child. In addition to home visits, participants of this program also attend monthly group sessions. These sessions consist of bonding with other families over a delicious brunch (morning) or dinner (evening). Let's Get Excited About Family Support!
Family support is a family-focused approach to human service delivery. It is community based and there are no eligibility requirements for participation. As opposed to identifying and fixing what is wrong, family support focuses on identifying and building upon family strengths.
